I got a glimpse of Janne Robinson’s world during one of her recent book readings hosted by Toronto’s Surf the Greats.
The quintessential surfer chick-turned writer was recently in the city promoting her inaugural book of poems: This Is For The Women Who Don’t Give A Fuck.
Aptly titled, the book explores everything from stories of lost love and sentimental adventures, to daily musings, powerful odes, and candid self-examinations.
Robinson is fearless in that she’s not only undaunted to touch subjects like abortion, love, suicide, and depression, to name just a few, but she digs into them with all her might and grabs you along for the ride through a lovemaking session, a trip to the gyno, a solitary cabin sojourn, and a round of nude surfing.
Raw, honest and poignant, each poem pulls the reader into various parts of Robinson’s soul with full force.
But if there is one fundamental message that runs its course through her writing, it’s the power that lies behind the female spirit. And in today’s political climate, her words aren’t just fitting but welcomed and most necessary.
