Wade in The Water (2023) Screening: A Celebration of Black Aquatic Culture

 

Surf the Greats and Brown Girl Outdoor World are honoured to host a sneak preview screening of Wade in The Water (2023) on June 3rd at 6PM! Join us for an evening of cinema, community, celebration, and discussion, with special guests filmmakers David Mesfin and Beyin Abraha, and local athletes Max Robinson and Jenifer Redsky-Bonnetplume

Following historical experts and community leaders in the BIPOC surfing movement, Wade in The Water: A Journey into Black Surfing and Aquatic Culture (2023reclaims the 1000-year-old tradition of Black surfing and aquatic culture, inspiring the next generation of Black surfers. This award-winning documentary braids historical accounts with modern-day testimonials, dismantles the racial barriers of conventional surf culture, and most importantly celebrates the overlooked history of Black surfing’s legacy and honors its current movement.

A Q&A with filmmakers David Mesfin and Beyin Abraha will follow the screening, as well as another special screening showcasing Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations' surf team Mułaa, and their youth outdoor programs. A Q&A with local athletes and BIPOC community leaders Max Robinson and Jenifer Redsky-Bonnetplume will culminate the evening.
